Pre-Match Context
I’ve already covered both of these squads in earlier pieces, so check those out if you want the full breakdown — I’ll keep this brief. France sit top of the outright title odds, and the quality of their squad isn’t in question. What they showed across three group matches has also put to rest any doubts about whether the pieces actually fit together.
France: The Front Three Are All Firing, But the Back Line Leaves Gaps Worth Watching
Mbappé, Dembélé, and Olise have all looked sharp through the group stage — Dembélé even became the second-fastest player in World Cup history to score a hat-trick — and the midfield is stacked too. But a squad this loaded isn’t without a wrinkle: France’s defenders push high and commit numbers forward so often that they leave real space behind them. Outside of their match against a clearly weaker Iraq, they’ve conceded in every group game. The defensive side is worth keeping an eye on.
Sweden: Two Isolated Strikers, a Gap in Class That’s Too Wide to Close
Can Sweden actually exploit that defensive gap? I’m sorry to say, based on what I’ve seen from their group stage, probably not. After their opener I genuinely thought Sweden’s striking pair — Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyökeres — gave them a real shot against the bigger sides. But having watched them against Japan and the Netherlands, it’s clear their defence and midfield simply can’t support that front two. The back line can’t hold, the midfield can’t get the ball out, and both strikers keep getting dragged back just to help retain possession.
Against a France side with the strongest attack in this tournament, that problem only gets worse. Sweden might steal a goal somewhere, but going toe-to-toe with France? Not even close — these two sides simply aren’t in the same class.
Key Battleground: What Shape Will France’s Win Take?
With Sweden’s defence and midfield both this fragile against France’s ferocious attacking lineup, just keeping hold of the ball will be a challenge — let alone supplying their own strike pair. They might nick a goal off one of France’s lapses, but that’s more likely to happen once France are already ahead and easing off.
Betting Recommendation
If I had to call it, France cruising through comfortably is the expected outcome here. Given France’s attacking quality and the chance Sweden steal a goal of their own, the Over on total goals is also worth a look. Please gamble responsibly.
